Raised in Los Angeles, Patton studied at the Alexander Hamilton High School Academy of Music. After her graduation, PBS selected her as one of four young filmmakers to participate in a program called The Ride, in which Patton was given access to equipment and a small crew, filmed her experiences with other youths across America.
Patton then enrolled at UC Berkeley , though she transferred to USC Film School after her first year, and where she graduated magna cum laude. Shortly after completing her studies, she worked with the Discovery Channel as producer for the show Medical Diaries.
Patton's first acting role was opposite Will Smith and Eva Mendes in 2005's Hitch. She followed that with a small part in the drama London (2005 film), and appeared alongside OutKast members Andre Benjamin and Big Boi in Idlewild.
Patton is married to singer Robin Thicke. They have been married since June 2005. The two met and dated during high school.
